Cakes provide a delicious finale to the most memorable and joyous occasions of our lives. It’s no wonder that we often seek out new and interesting decorating cake techniques to make those occasions more special.

There are many events in which a cake is an absolutely essential part of the celebration. If you are not the creative type, then by all means establish a relationship with a good, reputable bakery business in your town. The employees there will have countless ideas for themes and decorating, and you know the cake will get done right.

However, if you want to add a personal touch to your own cakes, a little creative flair is all that’s needed. Deciding on a theme and then staying consistent with the details (whether there are many elaborate details or just a few simple touches) is key.

For a child’s birthday, for example, a popular theme is animals. You can choose a few of the child’s favorite type (like farm animals or jungle animals) and decorate with edible cake toppers. This edible type is especially useful for children’s cakes, because you don’t need to spend the time and effort that you would normally have to removing inedible items.

An anniversary cake can be decorated in an especially elegant fashion. You can use silver and gold dragees (little metallic balls that are edible when used in decorating) to create a simple design or to spell out a message to the couple. Or try leaving the cake bare, with just a cluster of edible flowers (like hibiscus or carnations) in one corner.

Experiment with food coloring, different shapes, and unique containers to hold the cake. For example, for the friend who loves gardening, you can convert your cake recipe to cupcakes and nestle each muffin liner into mini garden pots. An ordinary cake can be turned into a romantic Valentine’s Day treat by tinting it red (like red velvet cake) and baking it in a heart shaped pan.

For milestone birthdays like the 50th or 60th, you can bake a sheet cake, decorate like a book, and write special memories in the flavor of a “this is your life” theme. Or you can simply spell out the birthday number in candles, sprinkles, or nonpareils.

The number of themes, ideas, and decorating cake techniques really are endless. You just need some patience and a great imagination to really bring a cake to life and make someone’s day.
