How to Write a Birth Plan

Why do you need a birth plan? Well, it helps you, your partner and your doctors know exactly what you are and are not comfortable with when it comes to giving birth. Your doctors want to do everything they can to accommodate you and your wishes so have them mapped out ahead of time with your birth plan.

Things to include in your birth plan:

  • Your name, partners name, phone number and address
  • Your due date
  • The hospital or location of your birth
  • The doctor you want present during the birth
  • Who you want present during the birth if any one besides your partner and what role they will play like taking pictures, holding a leg, helping you breathe, etc
  • Whether or not you want to receive medicine like an epidural
  • Specify whether or not you want a video or pictures taken of your child’s birth
  • Whether or not you would like to be induced or have help stimulating your labor
  • The atmosphere for your birth such as dimming the lights, music and/or silence
  • What clothing you want to wear before and during birth if you want to wear anything at all.
  • The position you want to be in when you give birth such as sitting, on your side, squatting, on your back or other.
  • Whether or not you want your spouse to cut the umbilical cord
  • If you want to be present or have your partner present while your baby undergoes their newborn screening with the doctor
  • If you are going to breastfeed or not and whether or not you want to have your baby circumcised.

All of these things help aid in your birth but remember in the event of a complication your birth plan will be overridden to save you and the life of your baby.
