Trump Removes NSF Board Members As Funding Cuts Raise Concerns

Posted on April 28, 2026April 28, 2026 By admin

The Trump administration has reportedly removed several members of the governing board of the National Science Foundation, a decision that has prompted discussion among policymakers and researchers.

According to reports, individuals serving on the National Science Board were notified that their positions had been terminated effective immediately. The notifications were sent through the White House Presidential Personnel Office.

The message informed recipients that their roles on the board were ending, stating the decision was made on behalf of Donald Trump. The notices did not provide detailed explanations for the action.

One board member, Marvi Matos Rodriguez, said she became aware of her removal while reviewing materials related to her responsibilities. She had been serving in the role since 2022.

Rodriguez noted that board positions are typically structured as multi-year appointments, allowing members to contribute to long-term scientific planning and policy guidance.

At this time, it remains unclear how many board members were affected or whether replacements will be nominated in the near future. Officials from the White House and the NSF have not publicly commented on the situation.

The development has drawn responses from lawmakers, including Zoe Lofgren, a senior member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Lofgren emphasized that the National Science Board traditionally operates in a nonpartisan capacity, providing guidance on scientific priorities and advising on the future direction of research funding.

She also raised concerns about maintaining the independence of scientific advisory bodies and the importance of continuity in long-term research initiatives.

The NSF itself has undergone broader changes in recent years. Reports indicate that a significant number of research grants have been canceled or paused as part of shifting policy priorities.

These grants represent a substantial portion of federally supported basic research in the United States, making funding decisions closely watched by the scientific community.

Some former agency officials and researchers have expressed concern that sustained reductions in funding could impact the country’s position in global scientific research and innovation.

The administration’s proposed budget for 2027 includes a reduction in funding for the NSF. Officials have described the proposal as part of a broader effort to align spending with fiscal priorities.

At the same time, Jim O’Neill has been nominated to lead the agency, with his confirmation currently under review by the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Outside of government, public figures such as Bill Nye have weighed in on the importance of sustained investment in science, noting that funding decisions can have long-term effects on research and innovation.
