Sen. John Kennedy Leaves Door Open to Possible 2028 Presidential Run
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) says he is not ruling out a possible run for the White House in 2028, although he emphasized that his immediate priorities remain the 2026 midterm elections and his own Senate reelection campaign.

Speaking during an appearance on Katie Pavlich Tonight, Kennedy acknowledged that supporters have encouraged him to consider a presidential campaign. While stopping short of making any announcement, he said he believes he could compete with many of the names expected to emerge in the Republican primary.
“A lot of people enter the field, and I think they are goobers,” Kennedy said, adding that friends have asked why he shouldn’t consider running himself. “I’m not saying I will do it,” he noted.
Kennedy Says No Decision Has Been Made
Despite the speculation, Kennedy stressed that any discussion about a 2028 campaign remains premature. He pointed out that the political landscape can change significantly over the next two years.
“Two years in our political world and in America’s history right now is a long time,” Kennedy said. “You don’t know what things are going to look like.”
For now, the Louisiana senator said his attention is focused on helping Republicans perform well in the 2026 midterm elections while preparing for his own reelection campaign.
Republican Party Looking Ahead to 2028
With President Donald Trump serving his second term, attention has already begun shifting toward potential Republican contenders for the next presidential election. While Kennedy declined to speculate about who may ultimately enter the race, he acknowledged that conversations about the GOP’s future are already underway.
Kennedy has become one of the Republican Party’s most recognizable lawmakers thanks to his direct communication style, memorable one-liners, and frequent television appearances discussing national policy and congressional issues.
Criticism of Democratic Leadership
During the interview, Kennedy also shared his assessment of the Democratic Party, arguing that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become one of its most influential figures.
He suggested that her standing has grown with support from Sen. Bernie Sanders and other progressive leaders, while criticizing policies he described as expanding the role of government.
Kennedy has consistently argued that progressive proposals move the country in the wrong direction and has predicted that Republican candidates will remain competitive in upcoming elections.
Looking Toward the Future
Kennedy was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016 after serving as Louisiana’s state treasurer and won reelection in 2022.
Although he left open the possibility of seeking the presidency in 2028, the senator repeatedly emphasized that no decision has been made. For the foreseeable future, he said his priority is maintaining Republican congressional majorities and continuing his work in the Senate.
Whether Kennedy ultimately launches a presidential campaign remains to be seen, but his comments suggest he is keeping his options open as the political landscape continues to evolve.
