Chicago Mass Shooting Leaves 12 Injured as Police Investigate Drive-By Attack on South Side
Chicago police are investigating a mass shooting on the city’s South Side that left at least 12 people injured after suspects opened fire from an SUV into a crowd late Friday night.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the vehicle pulled up near a gathering in a residential neighborhood, and at least two individuals inside the SUV began firing into the crowd before fleeing the scene.

Authorities said victims ranged in age from 17 to 47, with injuries reported across multiple hospitals. Two male victims remain in critical condition, while others are listed in stable condition with varying gunshot and graze wounds.
Police initially responded to reports of a single shooting victim but quickly discovered multiple injured individuals upon arrival. Investigators later confirmed that additional victims had been transported to area hospitals.
Multiple Victims Across Several Hospitals
In total, eight men and four women were wounded in the attack. One man reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh, while another sustained multiple injuries. At least one additional individual declined medical treatment after being assessed by emergency responders.
Officials have not released further details about potential suspects, and no arrests had been announced as of the latest update. Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether it was targeted or random.
Broader Public Safety Concerns
The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about violent crime in Chicago, where law enforcement officials have reported multiple shootings over the weekend, including several fatalities.
Community leaders and public safety advocates have continued to call for stronger measures to address repeat violent offenders, illegal firearms trafficking, and gang-related activity contributing to urban gun violence.
Pastor Donovan Price, a local advocate for victims of gun violence, described the timing of the shooting as especially troubling, noting that it occurred during Juneteenth celebrations.
“This should be a time of peace and reflection,” he said. “Instead, too many families are dealing with tragedy.”
Crime Trends and Policy Debate
The shooting adds to renewed debate over public safety policy in major U.S. cities, particularly regarding policing strategies, prosecutorial discretion, and resource allocation for crime prevention programs.
Residents in affected neighborhoods have repeatedly expressed frustration over recurring violence and the impact it has on community life, local businesses, and public gatherings.
While city officials continue to promote violence reduction initiatives, incidents like Friday night’s mass shooting highlight ongoing challenges in restoring long-term safety and stability in some areas of Chicago.
Investigation Ongoing
As of now, police say the investigation remains active, with detectives working to identify the suspects and determine a motive.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue gathering evidence and reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area.
Further updates are expected as the investigation develops.
