The father of Austin Metcalf is speaking out against what he describes as misinformation surrounding his son’s death, as Karmelo Anthony’s newly assembled legal team prepares to review the case for a potential appeal.

Jeff Metcalf recently criticized public figures and commentators who have shared opinions about the case, arguing that many have done so without fully reviewing the evidence presented during the trial.

“People formed opinions before seeing all of the facts,” Metcalf said during a television interview. “I wish more people would take the time to understand the details of the case before making public statements.”

His comments came after television personality Sunny Hostin discussed the case and questioned certain aspects of the trial, including the dismissal of a self-defense argument and the composition of the jury. Hostin suggested that appellate courts may review those issues as part of any future appeal.

Anthony, 19, was convicted of murder earlier this month and sentenced to 35 years in prison following the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, on April 2, 2025.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that the evidence did not support a claim of self-defense. Anthony’s defense team maintained that he acted because he feared for his safety during the confrontation.

Recently released body-camera footage from the investigation has renewed public discussion about the case. In the video, Anthony is heard speaking with responding officers shortly after the incident.

Meanwhile, the Stand With Karmelo Coalition announced that a new group of attorneys has joined Anthony’s legal team to evaluate the trial record and determine whether any legal errors may provide grounds for an appeal.

According to the organization, the attorneys will review court proceedings and pursue any appellate options supported by the evidence and legal record.

The case continues to draw national attention as supporters and critics on both sides debate the trial’s outcome, while the appeal process moves forward through the courts.
