Obama Alum Fired in Minneapolis Theft Scandal: Another Embarrassment for Democrat-Run Cities

Adam Fetcher, a 42-year-old former deputy press secretary in the Obama administration, was abruptly fired from his high-paying role as Chief Communications Officer for the City of Minneapolis on July 1. The termination stems from serious allegations of stealing cash and credit cards from fellow city employees.

High Salary Taxpayer-Funded Position Under Scrutiny

Fetcher had only served in the cabinet-level position for about a year after Mayor Jacob Frey appointed him in July 2025. His annual salary reached an eye-popping $186,495 — money coming directly from hardworking Minneapolis taxpayers.

Before joining city government, Fetcher held senior roles at major companies like Patagonia, Lyft, New Belgium Brewing, and Rivian. He also co-founded a consulting firm in 2016 and worked in various communications posts during the Obama years, including the 2012 reelection campaign and the Department of the Interior.

Theft Allegations Rock City Hall

An internal investigation revealed Fetcher allegedly stole cash along with debit and credit cards from the desks and purses of at least three city employees. The incidents reportedly occurred between mid-May and early June 2026, shortly after he returned from a nine-week personal leave for substance abuse treatment.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, surveillance video from a nearby smoke shop showed Fetcher using one of the stolen cards to make a $481 purchase of kratom on June 18.

Frequent Customer Caught on Camera

Store employees identified Fetcher as a regular kratom buyer and provided police with his vehicle license plate after an unauthorized transaction was reported. The alleged fraudulent charges, primarily at tobacco and smoke shops, totaled hundreds of dollars.

Minneapolis police investigated the theft reports and forwarded the case to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office on July 8 for possible criminal charges. Under Minnesota law, financial transaction card fraud can rise to felony level depending on the amounts involved.

Case Still Under Review

As of now, no criminal charges have been filed, according to a spokesman for County Attorney Mary Moriarty. The review process continues as authorities examine the evidence.

Kratom, a herbal supplement from Southeast Asia, interacts with opioid receptors and is sometimes used for pain relief or managing withdrawal symptoms. Its legal status varies, but the alleged misuse of stolen cards to purchase it has drawn significant attention.

Trump-Era Emphasis on Accountability Shines

This latest scandal in a Democrat-led city highlights the importance of strong leadership and fiscal responsibility that President Trump has long championed. While Obama administration veterans occupy high-profile government roles, taxpayers deserve better than alleged theft and waste in their local institutions.

Americans are right to demand transparency and integrity from public officials at every level. Stories like this reinforce why restoring law and order and holding government accountable remains a top priority for the America First agenda.
