Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Wednesday that a woman who was fatally shot during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation had been repeatedly obstructing federal agents before the encounter turned deadly. At a press conference, Noem identified the woman as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good and stated that agents had been dealing with her actions for an extended period prior to the shooting.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, video evidence shows Good’s vehicle stopped in the middle of a residential street while ICE agents approached and instructed her to exit the car. Officials said she refused to comply, instead telling agents to drive around her vehicle. Authorities allege that she then attempted to leave the scene by abruptly reversing her car.
Noem said investigators believe Good attempted to use her vehicle in a dangerous manner that put officers at risk. DHS maintains that the agents involved believed they were facing an imminent threat, which led to the use of deadly force. Federal officials described the incident as a serious security matter and said it remains under review.
Local leaders in Minneapolis strongly challenged the federal account. Mayor Jacob Frey questioned DHS’s version of events, while Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz urged the public to wait for the results of an independent investigation. State officials confirmed that the incident is being jointly examined by the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
The shooting occurred during a period of heightened tension over immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities, following the deployment of additional federal officers to the area. The incident has drawn national attention, with elected officials from both parties weighing in as investigations continue and more information is expected to be released.
