The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a bulk carrier was approached by armed assailants approximately 30 nautical miles southwest of the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeida.
The vessel’s security team returned fire after a skiff opened fire on the ship. The attackers then retreated to a larger vessel with its tracking system turned off.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident.
This latest attack comes amid heightened tensions in the region following the U.S. conflict with Iran. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have repeatedly threatened international shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
President Trump has made it clear that America will not tolerate disruptions to global commerce or threats to our allies and interests. His administration has taken a firm approach against Iran and its proxies.
The Red Sea corridor is vital — roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas passes through it during peacetime. Attacks like this force shipping companies to reroute around Africa, driving up costs for American consumers and businesses.

The Trump administration continues to monitor these situations closely and support efforts to secure vital maritime routes.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack, and investigations are ongoing.
