A chaotic scene unfolded near the White House on Saturday evening after reports of multiple gunshots triggered a rapid response from the U.S. Secret Service and emergency personnel. The incident occurred around 6:25 p.m. ET while journalists and television crews were working on the North Lawn, prompting officials to temporarily place parts of the White House complex on lockdown.
ABC News correspondent Selina Wang was recording a social media segment when the apparent gunfire interrupted the broadcast. Video from the scene showed reporters and staff quickly reacting as loud pops rang out nearby. Journalists and crew members were directed to seek shelter inside the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room while Secret Service agents secured the area and assessed the situation.
According to multiple reports, witnesses described hearing what sounded like dozens of gunshots near the White House grounds. Emergency responders from Washington, D.C. Fire and EMS were dispatched to the area near 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW after reports of two possible patients connected to the incident. Authorities have not yet released details about injuries, suspects, or the source of the gunfire.
President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House at the time and was confirmed safe. Secret Service personnel maintained a heavy presence around the complex as law enforcement worked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Counter-sniper teams and additional security units were also visible in the area during the response.
Officials have not yet provided a confirmed motive or explanation for the reported shooting activity, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are expected to release additional information as more details become available.
