The bill would require individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. Supporters argue the measure is a commonsense safeguard designed to ensure that only American citizens cast ballots.
“This House will pass the SAVE Act for the fourth time,” Johnson said, reaffirming Republican leadership’s commitment to advancing the legislation despite repeated opposition from congressional Democrats.
Republicans Push Election Integrity
House Republicans have made election security a top legislative priority, arguing that stronger voter verification measures are essential to protecting public confidence in America’s elections.
Supporters say the SAVE Act closes potential loopholes by requiring proof of citizenship during voter registration while preserving voting rights for eligible American citizens.
Democrats Continue to Oppose the Measure
Most Democrats have opposed the legislation, arguing that existing federal law already prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections and expressing concerns that documentation requirements could make voter registration more difficult for some eligible voters.
Republicans counter that requiring proof of citizenship is a reasonable safeguard used in many areas of government and helps strengthen election integrity.
The legislation is expected to pass the Republican-controlled House once again but could face significant hurdles in the Senate, where Democrats have previously blocked similar efforts.
