Trump-Endorsed Candidate Wins Indiana Primary After Recount Flips Three-Vote Loss into Three-Vote Victory
A major primary result in Indiana has been overturned.
President Donald Trump’s endorsed candidate is now the winner.
Republican Paula Copenhaver defeated incumbent state Senator Spencer Deery in District 23.
The Indiana Recount Commission certified the new total on Monday.
Copenhaver received 6,332 votes.
Deery finished with 6,329.
That three-vote margin reverses the original certified result from the May 5 primary.
In the first count, Deery held a three-vote lead of 6,337 to 6,334.
Election-night returns had shown Deery at 50.01 percent and Copenhaver at 49.99 percent.
Both sides claimed victory while outstanding ballots were reviewed.
Copenhaver requested a recount after raising concerns about unqualified voters participating in the Republican primary.
The three-member Recount Commission examined roughly 15 disputed ballots from the six counties in the district.
Eight ballots originally counted for Deery were rejected.
Two ballots for Copenhaver were also set aside.
The rejected absentee ballots lacked required items such as a county clerk’s signature or seal, or the initials of election workers.
Copenhaver’s attorney argued those official markings are necessary safeguards for mail-in ballots.
Deery’s attorney, Samantha DeWester, disagreed.
She said voters should not lose their votes because election officials failed to complete paperwork.
“Why on earth would we say your vote doesn’t count because there’s not a stamp on the backside of the ballot?” she asked.
The commission’s two Republican members sided with Copenhaver.
The Democratic member dissented.
DeWester called the outcome “unprecedented” and said an appeal is already being prepared.
Deery was sharply critical of the process.
“This was not a meeting intended to find fairness; it was designed to find votes,” he said.
He expressed confidence that Indiana’s appellate courts would restore the earlier count.
The race carried larger political weight.
Deery was one of 21 Republican state senators who joined Democrats to block President Trump’s effort to redraw Indiana’s congressional map before the 2026 midterms.
The proposed map aimed to give Republicans a realistic path to all nine of the state’s House seats.
Trump responded by endorsing primary challengers against the GOP lawmakers who opposed the plan.
Copenhaver was one of those endorsed candidates.
She currently serves as a government affairs director in Lt. Governor Micah Beckwith’s office.
The recount result delivers a clear win for the Trump-backed challenger.
It also sends a message about accountability inside the Republican Party.
Lawmakers who stood in the way of stronger Republican maps faced primary challenges.
In this case, the final certified count after the recount favors the candidate President Trump supported.
Deery’s campaign is preparing its appeal.
The process will continue in the courts.
For now, the official result stands with Paula Copenhaver as the Republican nominee in District 23 by three votes.
The outcome reinforces the importance of following proper ballot procedures and of voters having the final say when results are this close.
