Jelly Roll Pushes Back on Political Labels, Says Compassion “Isn’t Left Wing or Right Wing”

Country music star Jelly Roll is pushing back against the political labels that have followed him in recent months, saying his views cannot easily be placed into a single partisan category.

The singer addressed the controversy during a guest monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after his silence at the Grammy Awards and several jokes involving President Donald Trump prompted renewed speculation about his political beliefs.

“It is funny that before this week, everybody thought I was MAGA and now they think I’m some sort of liberal snowflake,” Jelly Roll said, describing how quickly public perceptions of him appeared to change.

Jelly Roll Says He Felt Pressure to Take a Side

The singer said he has become increasingly uncomfortable with people attempting to project political beliefs onto him.

“I guess I’m just not used to people projecting their beliefs onto me,” he said.

Jelly Roll traced much of the discussion back to the Grammy Awards earlier this year, where he received three awards. He described the achievement as one of the greatest moments and highest honors of his career.

Following the ceremony, reporters questioned him about political issues, including immigration and the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Why He Stayed Quiet at the Grammys

Jelly Roll explained that his limited exposure to current events contributed to his decision not to immediately weigh in.

He said he had spent 18 months without a phone and another four months using one without social media, leaving him feeling disconnected from many of the issues dominating public debate.

“I’ve become so disconnected from what’s happening,” he said.

Rather than offer an opinion without feeling informed, he chose to ask for more time before addressing political questions.

Looking back, however, Jelly Roll said he wished he had communicated his reasoning more clearly.

“I fumbled my words,” he acknowledged.

He said he does not regret wanting additional time before speaking, but wishes he had found a better way to explain what was behind his hesitation.

“I Was Afraid” of Being Politically Labeled

Jelly Roll said he became concerned that anything he said could immediately be interpreted as a political declaration.

In trying so hard to avoid making a political statement, he said, he ultimately created an opening for people to make assumptions about his views anyway.

Now, he wants his priorities to be understood in broader human terms rather than through a partisan lens.

His Focus on People Facing Difficult Circumstances

Jelly Roll said his primary concern is advocating for people dealing with difficult circumstances, including recovering addicts, single mothers working multiple jobs and former felons attempting to rebuild their lives.

He also discussed his own history with the criminal justice system, noting that he was previously unable to vote because of a felony conviction. With his voting rights restored, he said he intends to cast a ballot this November.

“So, I’m going to try to do the right thing, right now because human dignity isn’t Republican nor Democrat,” he said.

He continued by emphasizing that compassion and empathy should not be viewed as belonging exclusively to one political side.

“Compassion isn’t left wing and mercy isn’t right wing,” he said. “Pain and healing knows no partisanship.”

Jelly Roll Connects His Values to Faith

The singer also pointed to his Christian faith as an important foundation for his beliefs.

He referenced teachings associated with Jesus, particularly the ideas of welcoming others and loving one’s neighbor without placing political conditions on those principles.

For Jelly Roll, those values extend beyond partisan divisions and political boundaries.

A Handshake Isn’t an Endorsement, He Says

Jelly Roll also addressed speculation surrounding his interactions with political figures.

He argued that meeting, speaking with or even joking about a politician should not automatically be interpreted as an endorsement.

“I will shake the hand of any president that occupies that office because a handshake is not an endorsement, a conversation is not an allegiance, and a joke is not a political point of view,” he said.

His comments offered a broader explanation for his approach to politics: rather than embracing a specific label, Jelly Roll says he wants to focus on human dignity, compassion and people who are trying to overcome difficult circumstances.

For a performer whose public image has evolved dramatically over the years, his latest remarks make one point clear—he does not want his music, relationships or personal values reduced to a single political label.
