The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a landmark victory for President Donald Trump on Monday, ruling that the president has the constitutional authority to remove members of independent federal agencies—a decision that significantly expands presidential control over the executive branch.

The 6-3 ruling is being hailed by many conservatives as a major step toward restoring executive accountability and limiting the power of unelected federal bureaucracies.

Supreme Court Overturns 91-Year-Old Precedent

In a decision that could reshape the federal government for decades, the Court overturned much of its 1935 ruling in Humphrey’s Executor v. United States, a case that had restricted presidents from removing certain agency officials without specific legal cause.

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts declared:

“If anything more is left of Humphrey’s, we overrule it.”

The ruling clears the way for President Trump to remove Federal Trade Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter, whose dismissal had become the centerpiece of a broader constitutional battle over presidential authority.

Conservatives Celebrate Victory for Executive Accountability

Supporters of the decision argue that Americans elect a president to lead the executive branch—and that unelected officials should ultimately be accountable to the nation’s chief executive.

For years, constitutional conservatives have argued that so-called “independent agencies” accumulated enormous regulatory power while operating with limited accountability to voters.

Monday’s ruling represents one of the most significant victories yet for advocates of a stronger executive branch.

Decision Could Reshape Washington

The Court’s decision reaches far beyond the Federal Trade Commission.

Legal experts say the ruling could affect roughly two dozen federal agencies responsible for regulating labor disputes, workplace discrimination, consumer protection, federal employment, aviation safety, financial oversight, and other key areas of government.

Future presidents may now have broader authority to appoint—and remove—officials responsible for implementing executive branch policies.

Trump Continues Effort to Reform the Federal Bureaucracy

Since returning to office, President Trump has pledged to reform what he describes as an unaccountable federal bureaucracy.

His administration has argued that agencies exercising executive power should answer to the elected president rather than operate independently from White House oversight.

The Supreme Court’s ruling gives constitutional backing to that vision and could become one of the most consequential judicial decisions of Trump’s second term.

A Major Win for Constitutional Conservatives

Many conservatives view the decision as a victory for the Constitution’s separation of powers and for democratic accountability.

Supporters argue that voters should be able to hold presidents responsible for the actions of executive agencies—something they say becomes impossible when agency leaders cannot be removed by the nation’s elected chief executive.

With Monday’s ruling, the Supreme Court has dramatically shifted the balance of power in Washington, strengthening presidential authority and redefining the relationship between the White House and the federal bureaucracy for years to come.
