A widening federal investigation is now touching Gov. Gavin Newsom, his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and members of his inner circle.
New details suggest the probe runs deeper than many realized. According to reports, the FBI had a confidential cooperator inside Newsom’s political orbit for months — secretly recording conversations.
Longtime Democratic operative Alexis Podesta reportedly wore a wire as early as June 2024, cooperating with investigators.
This comes after Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, filing a false tax return, and making false statements to the FBI.
The case involves allegations of diverting approximately $225,000 from a political account in a scheme tied to former Obama cabinet member Xavier Becerra.
President Trump’s Justice Department is showing it will hold powerful officials accountable — regardless of party or political connections.
While Newsom has tried to frame the investigation as political retaliation, sources say it stems from whistleblower complaints about potential financial misconduct and the handling of state business.
The probe reportedly cast a wide net across Sacramento. Multiple lawmakers and lobbyists received FBI letters informing them their conversations may have been intercepted.
Even Republican Assemblyman Josh Hoover received such a notice, despite having no direct connection to the main figures.
“All of this stuff just raises so many questions,” Hoover said. “What is going on in this administration?”
The expanding scandal is fueling public mistrust in California’s leadership at a time when the state continues to face major challenges with homelessness, crime, high taxes, and business flight.
For years, President Trump has warned about the consequences of unchecked one-party rule and the weaponization of government institutions. This investigation appears to validate concerns about serious ethical issues in deep-blue states.
Newsom, who has been floated as a potential 2028 presidential contender, now finds himself and his closest allies under federal scrutiny.
The American people deserve clean, honest government. Whether in Washington or Sacramento, no one should be above the law.
As this federal probe continues to unfold, many are watching closely to see whether justice will be served and whether real accountability finally comes to California’s political elite.
