Tensions rose at the United Nations this week after Iran was appointed to a leadership role at a major nuclear treaty conference. The decision prompted criticism from several countries, including the United States.
Iran was selected as one of 34 vice presidents at the review conference for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The position is part of the leadership structure for the monthlong meeting.
The conference, held at U.N. headquarters in New York, brings together 191 participating countries. It is convened every five years to evaluate compliance with the treaty and discuss global nuclear policy.
U.S. officials expressed concern over Iran’s appointment. Christopher Yeaw, Assistant Secretary for Arms Control and Nonproliferation, criticized the decision during remarks to delegates.
Yeaw argued that granting Iran a leadership role could undermine the credibility of the conference. He said the move sends the wrong message given ongoing questions about Iran’s nuclear activities.
Several U.S. allies voiced similar concerns. Countries including the United Arab Emirates and Australia publicly supported the U.S. position.
Other nations, such as the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, also raised questions about the appointment. Their statements added to the broader international response.
Iran’s role at the conference came through the Non-Aligned Movement, a bloc of countries that often coordinates positions in multilateral settings. The group plays a role in assigning certain leadership positions.
In response to criticism, Iran’s envoy Reza Najafi defended the appointment. He described objections as politically motivated and reaffirmed Iran’s stance on peaceful nuclear development.
Russia also supported Iran’s position. Officials there argued that political disagreements should not interfere with the conference’s work.
A spokesperson for the United Nations, Stéphane Dujarric, clarified that member states are responsible for electing leadership roles. He noted that the Secretary-General does not take part in these decisions.
Dujarric emphasized the importance of focusing on the conference’s core mission. He urged participants to prioritize efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
The debate comes amid ongoing concerns about Iran’s nuclear program. Western governments and the International Atomic Energy Agency have raised questions about uranium enrichment levels.
Iran has maintained that its nuclear activities are intended for civilian purposes. The issue remains a central point of disagreement in international discussions.
