NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Busch will not compete in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway after being hospitalized for a severe illness. The 41-year-old driver was also scheduled to race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this weekend but will sit out all on-track activity as he receives treatment.
“Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization,” the Busch family said in a statement shared on social media. “He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation.”
Richard Childress Racing (RCR) announced that Austin Hill will fill in for Busch in the No. 8 Chevrolet during the Cup Series event. Hill currently drives the No. 21 in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series for RCR.
“Kyle Busch’s health is our utmost priority, and he and his family have the full resources of RCR behind them,” the team said. “Kyle is an integral part of our organization, and we wish him a safe and speedy recovery.”
The team emphasized that Busch’s No. 8 Chevrolet will be ready for him when he returns, and expressed gratitude to Hill for stepping in this weekend. “Please keep Kyle and the Busch family in your prayers, and help us respect the family’s privacy at this time,” RCR added.
Fans and fellow drivers have expressed support for Busch on social media, wishing him a swift recovery and emphasizing the importance of family and health over competition. The Coca-Cola 600 will proceed as scheduled with Hill behind the wheel of the No. 8 car.
