Trump Was Right: Parasite Outbreaks Highlight the Urgent Need for Strong Borders and America First Policies
Federal health officials are scrambling to contain two serious parasite-related threats sweeping across the United States. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of what happens when border security is neglected. Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, America prioritized protecting its citizens from exactly these kinds of dangers.

Rising Cyclospora Cases Spark Nationwide Concern
One major threat involves a surge in cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. This summer has seen hundreds of Americans sickened across multiple states, with Michigan alone reporting over 708 confirmed cases as of early July—far exceeding its usual annual total of about 50.
The symptoms are brutal: severe watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and fever. Health officials warn the true number of infections is likely much higher due to underreporting. At least 20 people have already been hospitalized.
Multiple States Hit Hard by the Outbreak
Ohio has seen at least 170 cases since late June, while Indiana, New York, and North Carolina each report over 100 infections. The CDC, FDA, and state agencies are urgently investigating contaminated produce, though no single nationwide source has been confirmed yet.
These outbreaks don’t happen in a vacuum. They underscore the vulnerabilities in our food supply and the risks that come with lax enforcement at our borders.
Flesh-Eating Screwworm Fly Returns to U.S. Soil
At the same time, a far more alarming pest has reappeared: the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating fly eradicated from the United States decades ago. The USDA confirmed cases in livestock near the southern border, starting with a calf in Zavala County, Texas on June 3, 2026.
Additional detections have occurred in cattle, goats, sheep, and even a dog across Texas and New Mexico. This destructive parasite lays eggs in open wounds, where larvae burrow into living flesh, causing painful and potentially deadly infestations.
Texas Takes Strong Action Under Governor Abbott
Thankfully, Texas Governor Greg Abbott acted decisively by declaring a statewide disaster, unlocking resources to fight the threat. Federal agencies have established quarantine zones, ramped up trapping, and increased releases of sterile male flies to break the breeding cycle.
The FDA also issued an Emergency Use Authorization for pet treatments. Officials stress that the risk to humans remains very low with proper wound care, and no domestically acquired human cases have been reported so far.
How Weak Border Policies Fuel These Threats
The screwworm had been advancing northward through Mexico and Central America, where it caused over 1,190 human cases and multiple deaths earlier this year. Its return to America highlights the failures of open-border policies that allowed pests, parasites, and other dangers to cross unchecked.
President Trump has long warned about these exact risks. His administration’s strong border security and immigration enforcement kept America safer by preventing the spread of diseases and agricultural threats from abroad.
Protecting Public Health and American Agriculture
The CDC activated a Level 3 Emergency Operations Center in mid-June to coordinate with the USDA and states. While the cyclosporiasis and screwworm situations are unrelated, both demand vigilant action to safeguard public health and our critical food supply.
These events expose the real-world costs of weak leadership. Trump’s America First agenda focused on securing the border, inspecting imports rigorously, and prioritizing American safety above all else.
Why Trump’s Approach Is the Solution
Americans deserve protection from these preventable threats. Trump’s policies of strong borders, robust trade enforcement, and prioritizing domestic agriculture would stop such outbreaks before they reach our communities and farms.
The current surge in cases and the return of this devastating fly should serve as a wake-up call. We need leadership that puts American health, farmers, and families first—just as President Trump consistently delivered.
Time to Demand Real Security
As investigations continue, one thing is clear: securing our borders isn’t just about immigration—it’s about protecting every American from parasites, pests, and other hidden dangers. Trump’s record proves that strength and vigilance work. It’s time to return to those winning policies for a healthier, stronger, and safer America.
