The lucky ticket holder now confronts a decision few people ever get to make:
- Take the full $1.04 billion as an annuity paid out in 30 graduated installments over 29 years, or
- Opt for a one-time cash payment of approximately $450.5 million (both amounts are before taxes).
Under Illinois rules, winners of prizes $250,000 or higher can choose to remain anonymous. That means the public may never learn the identity of this new billionaire.
Lottery officials note the winner has one full year from the drawing date to claim the prize. Their advice is simple and urgent: sign the back of the ticket immediately and keep it in a secure location until ready to come forward.
The retailer that sold the ticket is also celebrating. Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh will receive a $500,000 cash bonus for selling the winning ticket.

More Big Winners and a Windfall for Schools
The jackpot wasn’t the only major prize on Wednesday night. Tickets in Arizona, California, Florida, and North Carolina matched all five white balls (but missed the Powerball), each winning a standard Match 5 prize of roughly $1 million. A Massachusetts ticket that included the Power Play option boosted that Match 5 prize to $2 million.
More than three million tickets nationwide won some prize in the drawing.
Illinois public schools also benefit significantly. During the jackpot run that began in May, players in the state bought more than $53.8 million in Powerball tickets, generating over $21.5 million for the Common School Fund that supports K-12 education.
Putting the Win in Perspective
While $1.04 billion ranks as the second-largest lottery prize ever won in Illinois, it still trails the all-time Powerball record of $2.04 billion, claimed by a California ticket in November 2022.
The odds of matching all five white balls plus the Powerball remain approximately 1 in 292.2 million.
