Jasmine Crockett Faces Criticism After Honoring Chris Brown at Texas Concert
Rep. Jasmine Crockett is facing criticism after appearing onstage with Chris Brown and Usher at an Arlington, Texas, concert and presenting the performers with congressional recognition for their contributions to music.
Crockett, a Texas Democrat, appeared at AT&T Stadium on Sept. 12 during the artists’ R&B Tour. She praised the performers in front of the concert crowd and said she wanted the moment documented in the Congressional Record.
The appearance quickly became controversial because of Brown’s criminal record and history of allegations involving violence and abuse.
Crockett Praises the Performers’ Cultural Contributions
During the concert, Crockett took the stage alongside Brown and Usher and spoke about the significance of the event.
“Right now, we are experiencing Black joy to the highest level,” Crockett told the audience, adding that she wanted to make sure the moment was documented in the Congressional Record.
The recognition was titled “Recognizing the Artistry of Chris Brown and Usher Raymond.” It honored the two performers for their contributions to R&B and popular music.
Crockett was joined at the event by Texas state Rep. Venton Jones, who also participated in the presentation.
The appearance itself was not presented as a congressional vote or legislation. Rather, it was a congressional recognition of the performers’ artistic careers.
Brown’s Criminal History Became the Focus of the Backlash
Criticism centered largely on Crockett’s decision to publicly honor Brown given his history of criminal cases and allegations.
In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault after attacking his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna. The case resulted in probation, community service and other court-ordered requirements.
Brown subsequently faced additional legal proceedings.
He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in 2014 following an incident in Washington, D.C., and in 2026 pleaded guilty in Britain to affray in connection with a 2023 London nightclub incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw. He is scheduled to be sentenced in that case in October.
There have also been other allegations involving Brown over the years. Those allegations should be distinguished from criminal convictions or guilty pleas.
Criticism Came From Democratic Voices as Well as Conservatives
The backlash was not limited to Crockett’s political opponents.
Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross criticized the decision, arguing that a congressional office should not be used to elevate someone with Brown’s record of violence against women. CNN also reported that writer Roxane Gay described the appearance as a “bizarre and unacceptable misstep.”
Eric Michael Garcia, Washington bureau chief for The Independent, also criticized Crockett’s appearance, calling the decision to honor Brown inappropriate.
The criticism reflects a broader debate over whether an artist’s cultural accomplishments should be publicly celebrated by elected officials when that artist also has a significant criminal record.
Texas State Rep. Venton Jones Apologizes
Jones, who participated in the event, subsequently apologized for his involvement.
In a statement reported by CNN, Jones acknowledged that his participation had caused harm and specifically addressed women and Black women who had been affected by his actions.
Crockett, however, had not publicly addressed the criticism as of the latest reports.
Brown and Usher also had not responded to requests for comment about the controversy.
Brown Says He Did Not Ask for the Recognition
Brown later addressed the controversy himself on social media.
He said that the recognition had not been something he requested and argued that Crockett and others had approached him about it rather than the other way around.
Brown also said his Dallas concerts were already sold out and that he wanted the controversy to move away from the performance itself and back toward his fans.
His comments add another perspective to the dispute, although they do not resolve the criticism directed at the lawmakers who participated in the presentation.
Crockett Is Preparing to Leave the House
The controversy comes during Crockett’s final months in Congress.
Crockett sought the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Texas earlier this year but lost the primary to state Rep. James Talarico. She subsequently will not seek another term in her current House district and is scheduled to leave Congress when her present term expires in January.
Her appearance with Brown therefore comes near the end of her current congressional career.
The incident has also generated a broader discussion about the boundaries between congressional recognition, celebrity culture and the public record of individuals receiving official honors.
The Controversy Centers on the Decision to Honor Brown
The available reporting establishes what happened at the concert: Crockett appeared alongside Brown and Usher, praised their artistic contributions and participated in a congressional recognition presented to the performers.
The criticism that followed largely concerns whether Brown’s musical achievements should have been recognized in this manner given his criminal history.
