BREAKING: The U.S. Senate has confirmed the Secretary of Homeland Security by a 54-45 vote

Posted on March 24, 2026 By admin

The United States Senate has confirmed Markwayne Mullin as the new Secretary of Homeland Security following a 54–45 vote. The decision comes after a closely watched confirmation process that drew attention from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Mullin, a Republican from Oklahoma, will now lead the Department of Homeland Security, which is responsible for overseeing border security, immigration enforcement, cybersecurity, and domestic threat prevention. His confirmation marks a transition in leadership at a time of ongoing national security challenges.

The vote reflected a largely partisan divide, though a small number of lawmakers crossed party lines. Throughout the confirmation process, discussions focused on Mullin’s qualifications, leadership style, and policy positions related to homeland security and federal law enforcement.

With his confirmation complete, Mullin is expected to assume his new role immediately, as the department continues to address issues ranging from border management to emergency response coordination and infrastructure protection.

The two Democrats who crossed party lines to vote YEA:

🟦 Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA)
🟦 Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM)
