A former FBI crisis negotiator says the wording used by Savannah Guthrie in her family’s latest public appeal may play an important role in efforts to safely recover her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie. Speaking to Fox News Digital, retired FBI special agent Jason Pack highlighted the family’s careful choice of language, particularly Savannah’s use of the word “celebrate,” as a strategic attempt to reduce tension and encourage a peaceful resolution.
Savannah Guthrie appeared alongside her siblings in a video message shared publicly over the weekend, asking whoever has information about their mother to return her safely. Pack noted that phrases such as “return our mother so we can celebrate with her” were intentionally non-confrontational. He explained that in crisis situations, language that avoids blame or demands can help keep communication open and allow all parties to envision a positive outcome.
Pack also praised the Guthrie family for what he described as a disciplined and measured public approach under extreme emotional strain. He pointed out that their messaging evolved gradually, beginning with an emotional plea, followed by requests for reassurance, and later including a public statement expressing willingness to pay. According to Pack, these steps are consistent with strategies designed to show seriousness while avoiding actions that could escalate the situation.
Authorities have not confirmed direct contact between the family and whoever may be responsible, but messages sent through media outlets suggest some level of communication may exist. Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared from her Tucson home more than a week ago, and investigators have said the circumstances are concerning. As law enforcement continues its investigation, Pack emphasized that the family’s calm and deliberate public messaging could remain a meaningful factor alongside official efforts to bring the situation to a safe resolution.
