Lander, who received support from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, campaigned on a platform positioned to the left of Goldman and made the Israel-Gaza conflict a major issue throughout the race. Decision Desk HQ projected Lander as the winner shortly after polls closed, reflecting polling that had consistently shown him with a significant advantage.

Lander previously served on the New York City Council, representing Brooklyn’s 39th District, where he helped establish the Council’s Progressive Caucus. He later served as New York City Comptroller, overseeing municipal finances, auditing city agencies, and managing public pension investments.

His congressional campaign followed his unsuccessful 2025 mayoral bid, where he finished behind Zohran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo in ranked-choice voting. After Mamdani secured both the Democratic nomination and the mayoralty, Lander announced his campaign for Congress.

One of the defining issues of the primary was the Israel-Gaza conflict. Lander argued that the United States should withhold additional military aid to Israel while military operations continue under the conditions he has criticized. Goldman, meanwhile, maintained support for Israel while also advocating for humanitarian assistance, a ceasefire, and a negotiated two-state solution.

New York’s 10th Congressional District, which includes parts of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, is considered one of the safest Democratic districts in the country, making Lander the strong favorite heading into the general election.

Opinion: Lander’s victory is likely to fuel ongoing debate over the direction of the Democratic Party, with some commentators arguing it reflects the growing influence of its progressive wing. Others contend that the outcome highlights ideological divisions within the party over foreign policy and domestic priorities. Supporters of President Donald Trump have argued that these developments reinforce their view that the Democratic Party is moving further left, while supporters of Lander see the result as evidence that Democratic primary voters are embracing a more progressive agenda.

As with any election, voters will ultimately decide whether these political shifts reflect their priorities in future local and national contests.
