President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address received positive reactions from many viewers, according to a post-speech survey conducted by CNN in partnership with SSRS. The poll found that nearly two-thirds of those who watched described their reaction as at least somewhat positive, with 38% saying they viewed the speech very positively. As is typical for such events, the viewing audience leaned toward those already engaged in politics.
The survey indicated that confidence among viewers increased following the address. Before the speech, 54% of respondents said they believed the president’s policies would move the country in the right direction; that number rose to 64% afterward. Similarly, the share of viewers who said Trump’s priorities were aligned with the country’s needs increased after the speech.
On immigration and economic policy—two central themes of the address—62% of viewers said they believed the president’s approach would move the country in the right direction. Immigration in particular has remained a key issue in national political debates, and the poll suggested that many viewers felt the president devoted significant attention to it.
Economic concerns, especially inflation and cost of living, were also prominent. Just over half of respondents said the president gave the issue the right amount of focus, while others expressed a desire for additional detail. Views on trade policy and tariffs were more divided, reflecting broader national conversations about balancing economic competitiveness and consumer costs.
While State of the Union speeches do not typically shift overall approval ratings dramatically, the survey suggests that among viewers, the address reinforced existing support for the president’s policy priorities. Broader national approval figures remain shaped by a deeply divided political climate, but the speech appeared to solidify backing among those who tuned in.
