Liberal New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg criticized the Democratic National Committee’s long-delayed review of the party’s 2024 election performance, describing the report as lacking substance after months of speculation surrounding its release.
Goldberg argued that the document failed to provide meaningful explanations for the party’s losses and questioned why Democratic officials delayed making it public.
“The document, it’s now clear, was kept under wraps not because it was impolitic, but because it’s a disaster,” Goldberg wrote.
New York Times Columnist Questions Report’s Lack of Detail
Goldberg said the report was notable for what it did not address, arguing that it avoided several major issues that shaped the 2024 election.
She specifically pointed to the absence of discussions about voter concerns, demographic shifts, and major political controversies.
Goldberg also noted that the 192-page report did not mention the words “Israel” or “Gaza,” despite those issues creating significant debate within the Democratic coalition.
She questioned whether the report offered enough analysis about why Democrats struggled with key voter groups, including Black and Latino men and less politically engaged voters.
DNC Leadership Faced Questions Over Report Release
The report became the subject of internal debate after DNC Chairman Ken Martin initially indicated that he supported releasing the election review publicly.
However, Martin later changed course and said the report would not be released.
That decision fueled speculation among Democrats about why the document was being withheld.
Goldberg wrote that the delay turned the report into “an object of suspicion and fascination.”
Democrats Speculated Report Could Affect Kamala Harris’s Future
According to Goldberg, some Democrats believed the report could create problems for former Vice President Kamala Harris as she considered future political ambitions.
Others speculated that the report may have addressed internal disagreements over issues such as the Israel-Gaza conflict and its impact on Democratic voters.
Goldberg also cited comments from Democratic strategist Rob Flaherty, who had questioned whether the report even existed.
Conservative Commentary Highlights Missing Issues in Report
Conservative Washington Post columnist Ramesh Ponnuru also focused on topics he said were missing from the review.
Ponnuru argued that the report did not address several major political challenges facing Democrats, including:
- Concerns about President Joe Biden’s age
- Immigration and border policy debates
- Declining support among religious voters
- Controversial positions associated with some progressive activists
He argued that the report overlooked issues that influenced voter attitudes during the election.
Report Faces Criticism Over Treatment of Kamala Harris Campaign
Critics also pointed to the report’s discussion of Harris’ campaign strategy.
They argued that the review did not sufficiently examine the campaign’s performance, including its spending and messaging decisions.
The report also did not heavily criticize the process that led to Harris becoming the Democratic nominee after Biden ended his reelection campaign.
Democratic Autopsy Identifies Party Organization Problems
The report, released Thursday and first reported by CNN, argued that the Democratic Party weakened its political infrastructure over time.
It identified several challenges, including:
- Declining voter registration efforts
- Reduced financial support for state Democratic parties
- Weak engagement with key voter groups
The report also said Democrats need to reconnect with voters in Middle America and areas where Republicans have traditionally performed strongly, including parts of the South.
Ken Martin Distances Himself From Democratic Review
Despite the report’s release, Martin said he did not consider the document a reflection of the DNC’s official position.
“I am not proud of this product; it does not meet my standards, and it won’t meet your standards,” Martin said, according to reports.
He added that he could not “in good faith put the DNC’s stamp of approval on it.”
The report was written by Democratic strategist Paul Rivera and included a disclaimer stating that it reflected the author’s views rather than the official position of the Democratic National Committee.
DNC Says It Could Not Verify Some Claims in Report
The Democratic National Committee added another disclaimer stating that it was not provided with all underlying research materials used in the report.
The committee said it did not receive the interviews, source material, or supporting data necessary to independently verify many of the report’s claims.
Martin said the document was released for transparency purposes “as I received it” and included annotations identifying claims that could not be verified.
Report Author Faces Questions Over Political Experience
Paul Rivera, the Democratic strategist who authored the report, has faced questions regarding his recent involvement in presidential campaigns.
Reports noted that Rivera had not worked on a presidential campaign in more than two decades.
The controversy surrounding the report highlights broader debates within the Democratic Party over election strategy, voter outreach, messaging, and the lessons it should take from the 2024 election results.
