FBI Director Kash Patel Replaced As Acting ATF Boss, Army Secretary Steps In

Posted on May 1, 2026May 1, 2026 By Benjamin Harris
FBI Director Kash Patel Replaced As Acting ATF Boss, Army Secretary Steps In

Daniel Driscoll has taken on an additional leadership role, stepping in as the interim head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, according to multiple U.S. officials.

The appointment means Driscoll will oversee the ATF while continuing his duties as Army secretary, creating an unusual dual role within the federal government’s leadership structure.

Officials confirmed that Driscoll is replacing Kash Patel in the interim position. However, authorities have not publicly detailed the reasons behind the leadership change.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice acknowledged the transition but declined to elaborate further on the decision.

Patel, a prominent figure aligned with Donald Trump, had been serving as acting head of the ATF since late February, shortly after assuming leadership of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

As of Wednesday afternoon, public records still listed Patel as interim director on the ATF’s official website, leaving the timeline of the transition somewhat unclear.

The leadership shift comes at a time when Justice Department officials are reportedly considering structural changes, including a potential merger between the ATF and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Driscoll, who became the 26th Army secretary earlier this year, was confirmed by the Senate following his nomination by Trump and officially sworn in during February.

His background includes military service as an armor officer, with a deployment to Baghdad as part of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division.

After leaving active duty, Driscoll pursued legal studies at Yale Law School and later worked in legal services supporting veterans.

His professional experience also includes roles in finance and corporate operations, though his background does not prominently feature federal law enforcement leadership.

In his interim ATF role, Driscoll will oversee enforcement of federal laws related to firearms, explosives, and tobacco products—areas central to the agency’s mission.

Meanwhile, under Patel’s leadership, the FBI has reported a surge in recruitment interest, with thousands of applications submitted in recent months.

According to internal data, application numbers have significantly increased compared to prior years, reflecting renewed attention on federal law enforcement careers.

Officials attribute this rise in part to efforts by Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino to boost morale and public confidence in the bureau.

As both agencies continue to evolve, the leadership changes and recruitment trends highlight a period of transition within key U.S. law enforcement institutions.
