Republican Stuns California Governor Race After Massive Election Night Surge

California voters went to the polls Tuesday to help determine who will succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom, with early results indicating that Republican Steve Hilton and former Biden administration official Xavier Becerra are likely to advance to the general election. While ballot counting is still ongoing and official results may take time to finalize, both candidates emerged as leading contenders in the state’s gubernatorial primary.

California uses a “top-two” primary system, where all candidates appear on the same ballot regardless of party affiliation. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes move on to the general election. With several well-known Democrats competing in the race, attention focused on how support would be distributed among the large field of candidates.

According to early returns, Hilton led the field with approximately 28% of the vote, while Becerra followed with about 25%. Environmental advocate Tom Steyer placed third with nearly 20% of the vote. Other candidates, including former Representative Katie Porter, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, did not receive enough support to advance under current projections.

Hilton, a former television commentator and political adviser, campaigned on issues such as housing affordability, public safety, economic opportunity, and the cost of living. His message appeared to connect with voters concerned about everyday challenges facing California communities.

Becerra, who previously served as California attorney general and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, gained momentum during the later stages of the campaign. His performance positioned him among the top candidates and could make him the first Latino governor in California history if elected.

The primary also highlighted different perspectives within California’s Democratic electorate, as candidates appealed to a range of voters across the political spectrum. Political observers noted that the crowded field contributed to a competitive and closely watched contest.

The governor’s race has attracted national attention because California is home to nearly 40 million residents and has one of the largest economies in the world. Key issues discussed throughout the campaign included housing affordability, homelessness, public infrastructure, wildfire preparedness, water resources, and insurance availability.

Election officials continue to process mail ballots and other valid votes, meaning final vote totals may change in the coming days. California law allows properly postmarked mail ballots to be counted after Election Day, which can extend the reporting process.

In addition to the governor’s race, voters participated in several statewide and congressional contests that may influence future political dynamics at both the state and national levels.

Based on current projections, Hilton and Becerra appear well-positioned to move forward to the November election, setting the stage for a closely watched campaign in the months ahead.
