Socialist Democrat Declines to Reject Communist Label After Stunning New York Primary Victory
New York’s Democratic primary has once again highlighted the growing influence of the party’s progressive wing, as self-described democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier secured a narrow victory over longtime incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the heavily Democratic 13th Congressional District.

Backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the 32-year-old community organizer is now expected to become the district’s next representative in Congress, raising new questions about the ideological direction of today’s Democratic Party.
Refuses to Reject Communist Allegations
During a recent interview with MSNBC’s Ali Velshi, Avila Chevalier was asked directly how she responds to critics who label her a communist.
Rather than explicitly rejecting the characterization, she criticized what she described as fear-based political rhetoric.
“That framing is one that I’ve been very proud to be able to say I don’t respond to,” Avila Chevalier said, arguing that Democrats should focus on presenting a positive vision centered on affordability and economic issues.
For many conservatives, the exchange is likely to fuel concerns that prominent figures on the left are increasingly unwilling to distance themselves from radical political ideologies.
Past Activism Draws Renewed Scrutiny
Avila Chevalier’s political activism has also attracted attention following her primary victory.
While attending Columbia University, she helped launch Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), a student organization that supports the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.
The group has faced criticism over past social media posts, including one that reportedly declared its members were fighting for the “total eradication of Western civilization.” That post was later deleted.
Other statements attributed to the organization expressed solidarity with anti-colonial and liberation movements around the world, positions that have generated significant controversy among critics.
Conservatives Warn of Democratic Party Shift
Republicans and conservative commentators argue that Avila Chevalier’s victory reflects a broader shift within the Democratic Party toward increasingly socialist policies and activists with more radical political views.
Supporters, however, contend that she represents a new generation focused on affordability, economic inequality, and expanding social programs.
With Democrats continuing to debate the future of their party, races like New York’s 13th District are likely to remain at the center of the national political conversation as the 2026 election cycle moves forward.
