California’s primary election for the state’s 11th Congressional District moved forward with State Senator Scott Wiener emerging as one of the leading candidates advancing toward the general election. Other major contenders include Saikat Chakrabarti, a digital entrepreneur and former campaign manager for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Connie Chan, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Early counts showed Chan with roughly 28.6% of the vote and Chakrabarti with about 14.9%, though final rankings depend on continued ballot tabulation under California’s primary system. With eleven candidates in the race, the contest has drawn significant attention.

Nancy Pelosi, one of the most prominent figures in modern Democratic politics, currently serves her 18th term in Congress. She previously announced that she will retire at the end of her current term and will not seek re-election. Pelosi has endorsed Connie Chan in the race, and other prominent Democrats, including Rep. Adam Schiff, have also backed Chan.

Scott Wiener, a longtime California state senator, has served in the legislature since 2016 and has authored numerous bills focused on housing, environmental policy, and LGBTQ rights. Chakrabarti’s campaign has emphasized housing affordability and systemic political change, arguing for new federal approaches to increasing housing supply. California’s 11th District includes most of San Francisco, and the open-seat race is viewed as a significant contest as national Democrats debate the party’s future direction.
