JUST IN / Purple State Democrat Leader Faces Demands to Resign after She Suggests ICE Agents Should Be Shot

The political debate in Arizona has intensified after Republican lawmakers criticized comments made by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes during a recent television interview. Arizona Senate Majority Leader John Kavanaugh called on Mayes to resign, arguing that her remarks about self-defense laws and federal immigration enforcement officers were inappropriate and harmful.

The controversy stems from a Jan. 20, 2026, interview with 12 News NBC, in which Mayes discussed Arizona’s “Stand Your Ground” law. While explaining how the statute works, she raised concerns about situations involving masked or plainclothes individuals, including federal officers, and how civilians might perceive threats in certain circumstances. Her comments quickly drew scrutiny from Republicans and law enforcement groups.

Critics argue that Mayes’ remarks could be interpreted as suggesting justification for using force against Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents if their identity is unclear. Mayes also questioned the training and identification practices of some federal officers during the interview, further fueling backlash from those who said her statements risked encouraging dangerous misunderstandings.

In response, Senate Majority Leader Kavanaugh released a statement saying the attorney general’s comments created unnecessary risk and undermined confidence in law enforcement. He said Arizona needs leaders who clearly support public safety officials and communicate responsibly, adding that Mayes’ remarks fell short of that standard.

Other Republican leaders echoed those concerns. Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen said the comments were reckless and could put both officers and the public at risk. He argued that public officials, especially those overseeing law enforcement, should work to reduce tensions rather than escalate them during already sensitive situations.

Law enforcement organizations also weighed in. The Arizona Police Association released a statement expressing alarm over the interview, saying the attorney general has a duty to de-escalate conflict and protect officers’ safety. The group called the remarks irresponsible and said they could contribute to confusion or violence if taken out of context, urging greater care in public discussions involving self-defense laws and policing.
